Happy Birthday, Ruby Bridges!

Elizabeth Leiba
Happy 66th birthday to Ruby Bridges, who became a Civil Rights icon at the age of 6. We share the same birthday!! 🎂

In November 1960, she became the first Black student to integrate an elementary school in the South. Her parents were torn about whether to let her attend the all-white school, a few blocks from their home. Her father feared for his daughter’s safety. But her mother wanted Ruby to have the educational opportunities they had both been denied.

Ruby and her mother were escorted by four US Federal Marshals to the school EVERY DAY that year. She walked past crowds screaming vicious slurs at her. Undeterred, she later said she only became frightened when she saw a woman holding a Black baby doll in a COFFIN. ⚰

A lifelong activist for racial equality, she established The Ruby Bridges Foundation to promote tolerance and create change through education.

In a recent interview with Katie Couric, she describes the impact of the George Floyd protests and how she felt like watching that murder happen before her eyes was the last straw that spurred a global movement!

Let's remember her courage when we say talk about how far we've come as a country. Ruby Bridges is the SAME AGE as my Mom.
